The thing that caught my attention most about this book was the idea that Dorian had brought all of his suffering upon himself, and yet at the same time seems determined not to take responsibility for it—the same way any tragic hero does. As soon as the hero starts to take responsibility for his actions, they stop being helpless and they cease to be tragic.

"If World War Two was a piece of silverware, would it be a spoon or a fork?"

"Really?  You get one question and THAT'S your question?  Okay, umm, I guess it would be a spoon because-- well, no, wait, forks could do that too.  So it would be a fork because forks can... hey, can I just say spork?"

"It's a free country.  You can say spork."

"Yeah, I'm goin' with spork here.  The patroitism is the 'sp' part and the whole war thing would be... what do you call them?  The pointy things.  Prongs.  Yeah, the prongs are the 'ork.'"
